Oregon Sunstone Gemstones

Sunstone Butte Mine includes a number of claims situated on the side of an old volcano named Little Eagle Butte. The site was briefly mined and then abandoned sometime before being rediscovered by Dave Wheatly.

The location was then claimed under the name Pana Mines by Dave and another former co-worker at Panasonic Industries. In 2011 the original claims were split with 5 being renamed Sunstone Butte Mines. The mine operates as an open pit mine using an excavator to move large amounts of volcanic material out of the pit. For the rest of the season it’s a matter of working through what has been brought up, hopefully finding large Sunstone crystals among all of the cinder.

Sunstone Butte Mine is a significant contributor to the recognition and notability of Oregon Sunstone. The mine is known for producing green, red and multi-colored crystals of exceptional size and clarity. Frequently, the crystals also present a dichroic nature, showing red when viewed at one angle and green when viewed at another.

Dave Wheatly and Tammy Moreau have worked tirelessly to bring a special version of the very special gemstone known as Oregon Sunstone to public attention. We appreciate their cooperation helping American Gemstone to show off some real gems.
