We gathered in southern Oregon at a Sunstone mine to watching a blasting operation. In the group was a friend, Guenther Otto. He is an award winning gemstone cutter from Vancouver, British Colombia. We had mined Oregon Fire Opal at Juniper Ridge Opal Mine (now Opal Queen MIne) with Guenther a few years earlier. We asked him to cut a Fire Opal from our mining day together. Guenther didn’t hesitate and said yes.
After sending him some of the Fire Opal (which we’re sure he switched and upgraded), imagine our pleasure when he sent 3 carved Oregon Fire Opal back! He said he wanted to represent a good range of color.
The carvings have a similar cutting style, reminiscent of wings or feathers. We named them; Wingspan, Birds of a Feather and Plume. Attached to this post is the image of the Red/Orange Fire Opal carving, Plume
Thanks, Guenther!
